Short History: The origins of honeybush can be located somewhere in South Africa and it's been known to be used as a medicinal plant by indigenous Khoisan people for centuries. The dutch settlers in the Eastern Cape adopted very fast the practice of using the honeybush plant and this soon became a comercialised good in the region. From that point untill comercializing into Europe was just a small step and during the late 1700's the Duch East India Company introduced this miracoulous ,,bush'' in Europe and later to America.
Nowadays you can find honeybush in nearly all households in certain parts of Africa, as a ready to be consumed tea for the families or guests, or as a scent aroma inside the house.
About Honeybush tea: Honeybush or heuningbos (Afrikaans) known scientifically as Cyclopia, is a genus of some 20 species of flowering plants in the legume family Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. Species of the genus are native to the southern and southwestern Cape Provinces of South Africa. It grows only in small areas in the southwest and southeast of South Africa and has many similarities with rooibos. Honeybush and rooibos are considered types of red tea. The name cames from the fact that the plant smells like honey, the taste is similar to rooibos but a bit sweeter. There are two methods of processing honeybush for use in tea- the traditional one is to cut and bruise the leaves after harvesting and to leave them to sun oxidation. The industrial one is industrialised process oxidises the leaves in rotating, heated tanks at temperatures of 70–90 °C for two to three days. The leaves are then air-dried.
