Short History: Bancha is a Japanese green tea and the name itself sugest a common green tea, made for every day. Before ,, Sencha'' became popular in the 18 th century in the Edo era, most of the common green teas were considered Bancha. The tea trees used in the household as fencing between the houses and as well ussed for the home made tea were as well considered assortments of ,, Bancha''.

About Japan Bancha tea: Bancha can be obtain from different sources, one of them is from the leaves from the 3rd or 4th harvest of the year. The first harvest will come around spring to take the first flush of leaves and these leaves contain the most nutrients. These are used for higher grade tea such as Sencha or Gyokuro. The 3rd or 4th harvest will usually come late summer or later and they are used for Bancha.
The second source of tea is from leaves harvested in the Autumn or Winter. There are plantations which uses their later rounds of harvesting in Autumn or Winter. Sometimes this is conducted as a part of the maintenance and preparation for the cold winter. The leaves collected at this time will also be called Bancha. This Bancha is sometimes called the "Aki Fuyu Bancha", which means Autumn and Fall Bancha.
Third source is from leaves removed from Sencha.During the process of making Sencha, leaves that are too hard or too large may be deemed not suitable, and taken out. These leaves will be gathered and then used to make Bancha.
Japanese Bancha has light vegetal flavor of grass, celery, and wet wood, yet it is very assertive. The coffeine content is low and it can be consumed as well by children and older people.

Food pairing pairs beautifully with any cooked green vegetables (spinach, artichoke, asparagus, broccolini, etc.), with tofu or fish, seaweed and green peas.
